RUSU election fever spreads!

A total of 22 candidates have been nominated for the RUSU Student Officer and Student Trustee positions.
The upcoming RUSU elections will decide who will become the five full-time, paid Student Officers and the three voluntary Student Trustees to represent University of Reading students during the 2011-12 academic year.
Each of the available positions has attracted at least two candidates, with two running for President, four for Vice President (VP) Academic Affairs, three for VP Student Activities, three for VP Welfare and Representation and three for VP Democracy and Campaigns.

Reading University Students’ Union’s (RUSU) Year to Cheer campaign is now in full swing after it was voted in last month.
Reading voted ‘most improved university in Britain’ at BUCS Awards
The campaign, which was voted for at Student Voice on 25 January, seeks to increase student awareness and participation in University sports clubs across campus.

RUSU debates campus internationalisation

As part of One World Week at the University of Reading, RUSU (Reading University Students’ Union) organised a forum discussing the role of internationalisation at the University.
The event, which was organised by VP Democracy and Campaigns, Nes Cazimoglu, was held in Cafe Mondial in the Union building on Thursday 4 February.

The RED Award explained

The Reading Experience and Development (RED) Award was launched in Freshers’ Week, October 2010. Since then, over 450 students have registered to take part in the award. Why is this? It’s because the scheme rewards students for engaging in extra-curricular activities, such as work experience, volunteering and paid work, as well as helping students to identify the skills and personal attributes they have developed along the way.

Reading student to ‘SStartup’ technology business group

Students urged to complete survey

The National Student Survey (NSS) will officially commence on 17 January. Launched in 2005, the NSS will be an opportunity to evaluate what students on campus have enjoyed about studying at the University of Reading, as well as pointing out certain areas that need improving.

Reading student’s fame with surf dog

Since University of Reading student Michael Naish, 22, and his grandmother’s four-year-old Jack Russell, Oli, first hit the waves off of the south coast in Sidmouth, Devon, back in January this year, both have been rising stars in local and national news.
What first started out as an experiment suggested by Mr Naish’s grandma has resulted in a canine surfing extravaganza.

Reading students hope to help Ghana with scholarship

Last year two Ghanaian students, Lukest Mensah and Christian Crentsil, studying at the University of Reading, were the first students to be awarded the University’s Diageo Scholarship.
This scholarship is supported by the Diageo PLC and the Diageo foundation, and provides funding for both tuition fees and living expenses. The scholarship is worth £23,000.

Reading Model UN take on London conference

A group of Reading’s very own Model United Nation (MUN) society members travelled to London for a weekend of drama, diplomacy and debate at Imperial College London.
Reading MUN took part in the twelth spectacular session of London International Model United Nations (better known as ‘LIMUN’) on 11-13 February.

RUSU goes green for Green Week

Go Green Week, from the 7-14 February, was a national campaign to increase awareness of the environment and climate change.
Nes Cazimoglu, VP for Democracy and Campaigns at Reading University Students’ Union (RUSU) told Spark* that the importance of the University of Reading’s Green Week contribution is in tackling excess energy use and keeping up with the University of Reading’s “strategic operating plan”.
